The widening of screens has produced new paradigms in how people consume information. This all started with 16×9 TVs in the age of high definition. Then, that crossed over into the realm of computer monitors. As such, it opened a new toolbox for those who create UI on websites. It’s led to more designers thinking about bringing asymmetrical elements to web designs. Is Asymmetry and Split Screen a New Trend for 2020-21?

According to most sites watching UI trends, asymmetrical screens are definitely becoming more trendy this year. It’s taken a while for these split-screen ideas to hit the mainstream, something perhaps taking a little more time.

Even for a single platform site, creating a split-screen often makes sense to effectively present relevant information in two different quadrants. Perhaps to the naked eye, this doesn’t quite work when so many are used to the symmetrical formats seen since the earliest days of website creation.

Some arguments still exists to stick with symmetry in user interface design, if for sake of adhering to the simplicity trend. This can turn more problematic when more information needs to exist on-screen. Such a scenario could lead to a more chaotic UI, or just lack of visual appeal.

From a psychological point of view, creating asymmetrical designs helps the site look more alive rather than sterile. Of course, in the age of widening screens, it may turn more practical.

When taking a look at asymmetrical split-screens, it often gives the appearance of being dynamic if a website demands such an approach. It all depends on whether the site wants to achieve a level of trust and tradition or be a bit more daring in the message conveyed.

An asymmetrical design is for those who want to draw more attention to the screen. For a new business or brand trying to attract attention, it just makes sense. Plus, it can be practical when presenting new information.

Using a split-screen format, for instance, can almost look like a book one reads from one side to side. When presenting a plethora of technical information, this can help break up text into an attractive textbook format for a real-world feel.

Since asymmetrical UI also gives the feeling of movement, it’s ideal for sports-related brands. A designer should also consider the use of white space using split-screen and how it trains the eye to focus on certain objects. When debuting new products, this becomes a very effective way to keep viewer interest.

How Big Are Screens Becoming?

Some computer screens nowadays are as large as smart TVs. Standard screens are currently 24 to 30 inches if using one on a desk. Some are now as large as 50 inches, not including being curved besides.

Using more asymmetrical designs for these screens will have to become a new priority, something that helps save time anyway. Consider many split-screen designs now divide up different pages of a website into one. Some sites offer News & Events sections on the left side and then an “About” page on the right.
